National team coaches are likely allowed to nominated 26 rather than 23 players for the 2020 European Championships, which because of COVID-19, will take place in the summer of 2021. The Deutsche Presse Agentur reported on Tuesday that the UEFA Executive Committee had recommended a rule change for the tournament to minimize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Until now, teams were allowed to nominate 20 field players and three goalkeepers for European Championships and World Cups. The Times and AP also reported the potential rule change.

The executive committee of the European football union still has not confirmed the rule change but will decide this week. With big squads at their disposal, the 24 teams taking part in the European Championships from June 11 to July 11, which will take place in 11 countries across the continent, should compensate for the heavy load players have faced this season.
