Boyd: On the merits of of Fritz Walter weather and being in top form for Lautern
It was 1-0 for an international friendly between USL Championship side Louisville City and 2. Bundesliga side Kaiserslautern at the Lynn Family Stadium when Lautern’s Erik Durm delivered a fantastic cross inside the box to Terrence Boyd. But the former US men’s national team striker slipped and fell; the chance seemed to be gone, but instead, Boyd, lying on the grass, flopped forward to meet the ball with his head and tie the game (27’). Transfermarkt was on location and caught up with the former USMNT striker.
“The first goal, I saw [Erik] Durm was open on the wing, just tried to get into position as a striker,” Boyd said after the game. “I just tried to get into position. But then I dripped, I just tried to head the ball somehow, and then I got hit in the head,” Boyd said with a laugh, and then pointing at the cut on his head, which was held together by two staples quickly applied by the medical team after the goal. “It is a goal I won’t forget.”
Boyd’s second goal, however, was a beauty. A through ball found the 32-year-old, and Boyd then chipped the Louisville goalkeeper to give Kaiserslautern the lead (41’). “I am known for shitty goals,” Boyd said, laughing when asked about his second goal. “Usually, I score little tap-ins and whatnot. It came to mind was to chip it; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. This time it did.”
Terrence Boyd: The spirit of Fritz Walter – 32-year-old, led Kaiserslautern in scoring in 2022/23
The two goals came right around the time when the sky opened up over the Lynn Family Stadium. A downpour of magnificent proportions that seemed to favor Kaiserslautern. “It is called Fritz Walter weather,” Boyd said, laughing. “It is the magic of our FCK.” Fritz Walter, of course, is the legendary Kaiserslautern striker who led Germany to the 1954 World Cup. Today the stadium in Kaiserslautern is named after the striker, who was famous for excelling in tough conditions. To this day, games played in Germany in heavy rain receive the moniker “Fritz Walter Wetter” or Fritz Walter weather.
Suggesting that Boyd could receive the same legendary status as Walter in Kaiserslautern would be blasphemy. But there is no doubt the striker is in top form, and not just because of two goals scored in the friendly against Louisville. Boyd, in fact, led Kaiserslautern in goalscoring in 2022/23, scoring (13 goals and three assists). In fact, Boyd ranked among the top 10 goalscorers in the 2. Bundesliga last season.
And the secret is obvious. Interacting and watching Boyd in Louisville shows that the striker is in phenomenal physical shape. Despite struggling with jet lag, the forward looked sharp in practice and during the game. In fact, Boyd himself pointed out the importance of fitness when it comes to playing for Kaiserslautern in an interview with Gegenpressing on Wednesday. “We always have to be able to fight and work hard [if we want to have success].”
