After spending a record €612 million in the 2022/23 season, Chelsea are now working on setting a new income record in the transfer market. With Ethan Ampadu’s move to Championship side Leeds for €8m, the Blues have earned €254m from player sales this summer – an amount only topped twice in the history of football.

With the sales of players like Conor Gallagher, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Hakim Ziyech and Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea could still break the income record. This could be necessary given Financial Fair Play regulations, which is also why some transfers were completed before July 1 for accounting reasons. Chelsea have long been good at generating revenue from player sales. Despite being the only club to invest over €2 billion in the squad since 2013/14, no club has a higher transfer income since then either.
Since takeover: Chelsea moved over €1bn in the transfer market
Since Todd Boehly and his business partners took over at the end of May 2022, Chelsea have moved more than €1bn in the transfer market. While €724m were spent on 20 signings, the club earned €322m from 16 sales. Twelve further players left the Blues on free transfers, and Mauricio Pochettino is the fourth head coach in twelve months. This summer, Chelsea already sold a whole potential starting eleven with a number of prominent names in it.
The transfer activities under Boehly also rejuvenated the team. With an average age of 23.8, Chelsea boast by far the youngest squad in the Premier League. If you leave players up for sale like Ziyech, Lukaku and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang out of the equation, the average is just under 23.
Chelsea transfers: Huge salary savings thanks to rejuvenation of the squad
Thanks to the radical rejuvenation of the squad, Chelsea are enjoying huge salary savings, and by deadline day on September 1, Moisés Caicedo, the next 21-year-old, could be signed from Brighton. However, to pull off such a transfer, further earnings from player sales are likely to be needed. The transfer income record of Monaco from 2018 could therefore be broken if Boehly wants to continue to buy.
