Rashford and White excluded - Most valuable English players to miss out on Euro 2024

Gareth Southgate named his provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2024 on Tuesday afternoon and there were some notable absentees. Southgate will trim his squad down to 26 players ahead of the tournament with England kicking off their campaign against Serbia on June 16th. 

England will be one of the favourites to lift the trophy in Germany this summer after losing to Italy in the final of the last European Championships. England’s squad is littered with world class talent with Harry Kane, Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice all entering the tournament on the back of stellar seasons for their respective clubs. But several Englishman will be dismayed after being excluded from Southgate’s initial squad and we’ve analysed some of Tranfermarkt’s most valuable absentees. Top ten most valuable English players missing out on Euro 2024

Southgate faced some huge decisions when selecting his initial squad for England’s training camp given the amount of talent at his disposal and he’s omitted some household names. The biggest omission is Marcus Rashford with the Manchester United star’s dismal form proving costly. On Rashford’s omission, Southgate explained: ‘I just feel other players in that area of the pitch have had better seasons - that’s it’.

As the graphic above illustrates, Rashford is the most valuable Englishman on Transfermarkt not to be included in Southgate’s preliminary squad at €60 million. Ben White ranks second at €55m but his omission isn’t due to performance levels. White has excelled for Arsenal this season at right-back but he withdrew from the England squad at the last World Cup due to a disagreement with staff and it’s understood that he didn’t make himself available for selection. Three Chelsea players make up the top five in Reece James, Levi Colwill and Raheem Sterling with James’ omission the most surprising given he’s returned to fitness recently. Fikayo Tomori’s continued absence from Southgate’s selection has raised eyebrows but the AC Milan defender isn’t favoured by the England manager.

Southgate has repeatedly been criticised for showing favouritism to certain players across his tenure but that’s less applicable in this preliminary squad. Jordan Henderson is widely viewed as one of Southgate’s most trusted lieutenants but he’s been left out with the English boss admitting it was a tough decision. ‘It’s difficult for me to leave Henderson out of the squad, he’s always been supportive,’ he said. ‘The determining factor was the injury he picked up in the last camp. He's missed five weeks and hasn't been able to get to the intensity required’. 

England could name an incredibly strong starting eleven from players not included in Southgate’s provisional squad and the above XI would have a combined market value of €337m. Despite shining for Borussia Dortmund as they reached the Champions League final, Jadon Sancho has been omitted, while Dominic Solanke can consider himself unlucky after an excellent season with Bournemouth.
