Report: Rangnick agrees terms with United - Pending approval by Lokomotiv Moscow
After dismissing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday, Manchester United appear to have found a replacement. According to a report by The Athletic, the Red Devils have reached an agreement with Ralf Rangnick. Rangnick is expected to take over until the end of the season, allowing the club time to find a long-term solution. The 63-year-old will then stay on in a consultancy role for another two years.
Only a veto from Lokomotiv Moscow, where Rangnick has signed a consultancy contract and is officially listed as Head of Sport and Development until 2024, could stop a transfer. Given the nature of the deal in place with the Russian Premier Liga club, that veto, however, seems unlikely.
Numerous names have been linked with Manchester United, where Michael Carrick is currently in charge in an interim role. Ernesto Valverde and Rudi Garcia were promising candidates but the club was also linked to Lucien Favre, Paulo Fonseca, Zinédine Zidane and Mauricio Pochettino.
Manchester United first club abroad for Ralf Rangnick
It would be the first time that Rangnick would coach a club outside of Germany. In Germany, where Rangnick's coaching career started in 1995, the 63-year-old was in charge of SSV Reutlingen, SSV Ulm, VfB Stuttgart, Hannover 96, Schalke, Hoffenheim, and then RB Leipzig, before moving on to become Global Sports Director at Red Bull. Rangnick then signed a consultancy contract with Lok Moscow without physically moving to the Russian capital.
