Reports: Tigres UANL set to sign Thauvin on free transfer - Reunion with Gignac?

Mexican first division club Tigres UANL are working on a transfer of former Newcastle winger Florian Thauvin, who currently plays for Olympique Marseille. In addition to Marca Claro Mexico and TV channel TUDN, other media outlets report about the interest as well. The Liga MX side is understood to be in exchange with the agent of the 28-year-old already.

According to Telediario, the deal is even close to completion. Negotiations are “90 percent advanced, so in the next few days the contract could be finalised and the announcement could be made.” Thauvin’s contract with OM expires in the summer. With a market value of €28 million, he is one of the most valuable players who are available on a free transfer after the season.

“I think this matter should have been clarified a long time ago, a player in my position should not be in this situation at the moment,” the ten-time international told L’Équipe in September, revealing that Marseille had not offered him a contract extension at the time, which is why he had “no choice” but to think about leaving. Subsequently, Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan, among others, were rumoured to be interested.

Thauvin and Gignac reunited at Tigres UANL soon?

In Mexico, José Macías currently tops the market value ranking with €10 million. In case of a transfer, Thauvin would leave the striker well behind. The winger has missed just one league game this season, being directly involved in 16 goals in 34 appearances. At Los Tigres, he could reunite with André-Pierre Gignac, who is still tied to the financially strong seven-time Mexican titleholders until 2024. In the past, the former France internationals played together in 72 matches for Marseille between 2013 and 2015.
