Will Erik ten Hag lead Man United to their lowest ever Premier League points tally?
Erik ten Hag’s future as Manchester United manager has dominated the column inches this season more than any other story. It’s been a dismal second campaign in England for the 54-year-old and speculation has raged that Sir Jim Ratcliffe will appoint a new manager in the summer after acquiring sporting control at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag has been unwavering in his belief that he will remain in the dugout next season but he remains at serious risk of recording an unwanted record. United ended a dismal run of three consecutive defeats by beating Newcastle 3-2 in their final game at Old Trafford this season. The victory preserved their hopes of securing European qualification but they'll need to better Newcastle's result on the final day when they travel to Brighton. But Ten Hag will travel to East Sussex still at risk of leading United to their lowest ever Premier League points tally.
Manchester United’s worst points totals in Premier League history
Ten Hag is in danger of leading Man United to their worst ever finish since the Premier League’s inaugural 1992/93 season. United have lost 14 games in the league this season and they’ve only picked up 57 points from their 36 games. As the graphic below illustrates, Ten Hag’s men need to beat Brighton on the final matchday to avoid at least matching United’s worst final points tally in Premier League history, which stands at 58 points from the 2021/22 season. United currently sit on 57 points and a win against Roberto de Zerbi's men would see them finish on 60 points but a draw would see them equal their lowest ever points defeat and they'd record their worst ever points tally if they lose against Brighton.
That arrived in the 2021/22 season before Ten Hag’s appointment at Old Trafford. Ole Gunnar Solskjær started the campaign as manager before the Norwegian was sacked and replaced by Ralf Rangnick. United finished 6th that season but their worst ever league placing arrived in the 2013/14 campaign when they finished 7th under the tutelage of David Moyes and they currently sit 8th. United have been decimated by injuries this season but Ten Hag will be desperate to avoid the humiliation of their worst Premier League points total with the Dutchman under considerable pressure.
