Transfermarkt has updated the market values in the Premier League. Among the biggest winners are several prominent summer transfers, including Chelsea’s €53 million signing Timo Werner, who is catching up with fellow countryman Leroy Sané in terms of market value, and his newly recruited teammate Ben Chilwell. The 23-year-old left-back, for whom around €50 million were put on the table, was part of the Blues’ major shopping spree. The former Leicester defender is considered with a 25% plus and from now on listed with a market value of €50 million, matching the transfer fee paid for him.

In addition to Chilwell, several promising Chelsea talents are enjoying market value upgrades, including Mason Mount (from €40.5 million to €45 million), ex-Bayern Munich target Callum Hudson-Odoi (from €31.5 million to €35 million) and Reece James (from €22.5 million to €30 million). German centre-back Antonio Rüdiger is clearly on the decline – the 27-year-old falls from €40 million to now €30 million.

“Rüdiger has lost his regular place in Chelsea’s central defence this season and did not make the squad in the Premier League in the last three matches. After a summer transfer could not be realised, the Germany international is currently only centre-back number five at the Blues,” Daniel Busch, area manager Transfermarkt England, explains the situation and devaluation of the 27-year-old, who has a contract running until 2022 and must hope for a new chance under coach Frank Lampard at least until winter.

20-year-old Phil Foden was able to draw the most attention to himself. The central midfielder is an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s plans at Manchester City. “Foden played his way into the first eleven after the coronavirus interruption and made his international debut in September. In the long term, he is set to replace club icon David Silva in Man City’s midfield,” Busch continues. As a result of his increased role, Foden’s value is now set at €60 million (previously €40 million), which corresponds to an increase of 50%.

Manchester City: Upgrades for Jesus and Aké - Agüero loses value

Together with high-flying Foden, Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus (from €56 million to €60 million) and new central defenders Nathan Aké and Rúben Dias will also be upgraded. €45 million signing Aké jumps from €28 million to €40 million Euro (+42.9%), while €68 million arrival Dias goes up from €35 million to €50 million (+42.9%). For teammate Sergio Agüero, the figure will drop from €52 million to €42 million due to injury and age. The Argentinean will probably be absent for a few weeks after undergoing surgery on his left knee.

At defending champions Liverpool, the market value update focuses on striker Diogo Jota in particular. For the 23-year, the Reds paid around €45 million to Wolverhampton. “After three strong years at Wolves, Jota is now supposed to support Liverpool’s top forwards. His market value will therefore be brought closer to the price the club paid for the Portuguese,” Busch says. Jota is now listed at €40 million, an increase of 42.9%.

Jürgen Klopp’s league winners around Alisson (from €72 million to €80 million), Andrew Robertson (from €64 million to €75 million) and Fabinho (from €56 million to €60 million) are also among the market value winners, while for several Arsenal players things go in the opposite direction.

Busch says: “At Arsenal there are some performance- and age-related devaluations. High salaries make it difficult for the Gunners to sell players like Sead Kolasinac (drops from €16 to €10 million), Shkodran Mustafi (from €15 million to 12 million) or Sokratis (from €8 to €6 million), and Mesut Özil (from €12 million to €9 million) is also expected to fulfil the last year of his contract.”

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (from €56 million to €50 million) and Alexandre Lacazette (from €48 million to €42 million) are also on the decline. In addition, record signing Nicolas Pépé goes down by 11.1% (from €45 million to 40 million). The 25-year-old attacking player “could not fulfil the high expectations so far and is downgraded to half of the transfer fee paif for him after only one year. In Willian he now has an experienced competitor in his regular position,” Busch describes the situation. In total, Arsenal players recorded a loss in value of €37.5 million. Positive examples are the revaluations of €50 million signing Thomas (from €40 million to €50 million), homegrown talent Bukayo Saka (from €35 million to €40 million), €26 million signing Gabriel (from €20 million to €28 million) and Granit Xhaka (from €24 million to €28 million).

Tottenham Hotspur: Market value minus for Alli - Minor role under Mourinho

Tottenham’s Dele Alli is currently a long way from being upgraded in these dimensions. The 24-year-old midfielder will be worth only €52 million instead of €64 million in the future. Busch says: “After the break in the Premier League, Alli didn’t really get into gear and struggled with muscular problems. This season, manager José Mourinho has not called him up to the squad on several occasions, and he currently lacks his former assertiveness in many situations. At the end of the transfer window, there were rumours about a loan move to PSG, but this did not materialize. Now, Alli must find his way back into contention for a spot at Spurs.” The Englishman is approaching his market value of 2017 – at that time he was listed at €45 million.

At Mourinho’s former employers Manchester United, €8.5 million striker Facundo Pellistri earned a 289% plus (from €1.8 million to €7 million). For convincing midfielder Bruno Fernandes, it goes up from €70 million to €80 million.
