Vancouver Whitecaps want Otávio - Among 20 most valuable free agents

Vancouver Whitecaps have been heavily linked with a move for Porto star Otávio. The Brazilian attacking midfielder is a free agent this summer. According to a report by SIC Noticias last week the Whitecaps have made an offer for the €18 million valued attacking midfielder. That offer was €2 million, plus a €5 million sign-on bonus for the player. 

The Portuguese report, however, suggests that the player did not respond to the offer and it has since expired. Transfermarkt, furthermore, understands that Milan are heavily interested in the player. Other clubs in the running include Leicester, Roma, Juventus, and Napoli, according to a report from Italy.

Despite the heavy competition, the Whitecaps believe they are still in the running to land the 25-year-old playmaker. Sources have told this outlet that reports that the initial offer has expired are not true. The Whitecaps would still like to add Otávio, who is the 10th most valuable free agent still available next summer.

Otávio signing a milestone for Whitecaps - 2nd most valuable player in MLS

Signing a player of Otávio's standing would be a milestone for both the Whitecaps and Major League Soccer—the club would jump from 20th place in overall league squad value to fourth place just ahead of Toronto FC. The 25-year-old has a current market value of €21 million ($23.1 million), which would make him the most valuable player in the league ahead of Los Angeles FC's Diego Rossi (market value €20m).  

On the field, Otávio would also be a major addition. Playing for giants Porto, the Brazilian has managed 17 goals and 45 assists in 167 games for the club leading the Dragões to two national championships (2018 & 2020) and a cup win (2020).
